'I just want respect!' - Chapter 4 LOTF

Painted Face, and Long hair.
'I just want respect!'
Perspective: Jack
Lord Of the Flies

1.
What things are you having trouble adjusting to on the island that are different from your life at home in England?

I really miss waking up in the morning, and having breakfast ready without having to actually work for my bacon. I'm just so used to not having to work for my good. And now that I'm leader of the Hunters, I must do most of the work just to feed all those lousy fools.

2.
How do you feel about the littluns?
The littluns are a big hassle. But it's not really their fault. They're young, and immature. They're just so used to having their parents take care of them and everything. But that will change soon. Once the challenges get more drastic.

3.
What do they do with their time?
Mostly the littluns don't do anything that helps the rest of the boys. They just get themselves in trouble, and make stupid mistakes by 'accidentally' hurting eachother.

4.
Why do you all paint your faces?
I decided to first paint my face to camouflage with my surroundings, that way the pigs wouldn't be able to see me as easy, so that I could kill it faster without it running away.

5.
What does this foreshadow?
This means that later in the book, I'll be able to catch more pigs and other animals for the boys. And save the day! And maybe I'll get more respect this time!

6.
How do you feel when your face is painted?
I feel like a strong man. A powerful man. A man in control. And the hero. I've never felt like that before.

7.
Why doesn’t the passing ship see you on the island?
The passing ship doesn't see us on the island, because thanks to me. The fire wasn't seen by it. So they had no idea there were any people on this island. Unfortunately, that might be our only chance to be saved.

8.
Why was the fire allowed to go out?

Well, I led the hunters to go hunt for more food. And since all the hunters were out, the fire was left un-watched. And it got out of control from there.

IF YOU ARE JACK:

1.
Why do you lead the hunters in chanting, “Kill the pig. Cut her throat.”
I started this chant, because when we are hunting for the pig, the best and easiest way to kill her, was to cut her throat. And we created a circle around her to trap her.

2.
Where does this desire to kill come from?
The desire to kill, that I hold comes from that fact that I want respect. Maybe once I'm the one who actually puts the food on the plate, maybe people will respect me more.
